Stories

Hello everyone!  Wow, it's been awhile since I updated this page!  The summer went quite well.  We were very busy.  The boys each did a few camps.  Lego camp, Super Moverz and surfing for Troy!  It flew by, but we had quite a bit of fun.

For those who don't know, Alex was finally diagnosed with Fructose Intolerance in June.  He had a breath test that confirmed it.  It's taken some time to get used to it, and it's sad that he can't have a lot of fun junk foods and most fruits are out of his diet.  But, he feels so much better that he is totally ok with it!  He knows if he has an apple, he'll get sick or a big piece of birthday cake or even a sip of juice.  We have found some good replacements.  He can have lemonade, organic chocolate milk, and we found sound organic Oreo-like cookies too!  The hardest part is getting others to comply and read labels so they don't give him something he can't have.  It's not an allergy, so the only side effect is a bit of a tummy ache and many trips to the bathroom.  BUT, if he overdoes it, it can also cause organ damage, so we still have to be quite careful.

School started August 23rd and it's been a great year so far.  Troy teacher, Mrs. Webb, is probably the best teacher he's had so far...and he's had a lot of great teachers.  She is kind yet firm, young and energetic.  She definitely teaches outside the box.  They get so much done in class, he only has 1 sheet of homework a night.

Alex's teacher, Mrs. Mulvey, is a very seasoned teacher.  She has had about 25 yrs. experience and is sweet as can be.  He is learning quite a bit and can finish his homework (writing his ABC's) with his eyes closed and one hand tied behind his back!  He is thriving and loving it.  I have the privilege of being in his class on Mondays for all 3.5 hours and in Troy's classroom on Wed. mornings and in his art class on Friday mornings.  I love being so involved and getting to watch them in class.

Troy is home right now with the Chicken Pox!  He had the vaccine, so he has a very very mild case.  No fever, no ick and very few spots.  I am kind of hoping Alex gets it now too, and it is also a mild case.  Better now than later down the road.  But, then again, he also had the vaccine and maybe he won't get it at all!

Well, we just returned from our Christmas on Maui.  It was such an amazing time.  A week in paradise with family has to be the best week ever!  We spent a lot of time on different beaches, playing in the water and snorkeling.  Everyone agreed that the best beach was Kapalua Bay.  We went Whale watching and saw lots of activity.  I was able to get video of a Humpback whale breaching.  Very, very cool!  The men went on a fishing excursion.  And the kids also loved the pool..  We had the best views ever from our condo! I would catch myself just starring out the window.
The boys enjoyed shopping for some treasures to bring home.  Troy bought a Tiki head (the protector Tiki) and a drum, as well as a couple of special collector coins from our Whale watching trip.  Alex bought this really cool, wind spinner thing for our backyard, and a tiki head as well as a collector coin.  They were able to spoil themselves a little bit and still came home with some money for video games of course.
We spent Christmas Eve at Kimo's in Lahaina and then had to pack up to come home :(  We woke up Christmas morning to find that Santa had made a special trip to Maui for the boys.  They got a few more Hawaiian treasure to bring home.  All the kids opened their gifts together in Nonna and Nunnu's condo.  It was very sweet.  None of us wanted to leave the island, nor leave each other.  We're so lucky to have Tim, Shannon and Gianna so close by and now of course Nonna and Nunnu have their new beach house in Redondo, but it is so hard saying goodbye to the Portland Dossa's.  Alex would not let Uncle Scott go and sobbed when he had to.  It was very sad, but also warmed my heart to know that my little boy loves my big brother so much!  We were able to cheer them up when we told him that they would be down for Sammy's birthday in March and we would be able to go to Disneyland with them!  Alex has also formed a sweet relationship with Claire.  The 5 cousins have so much fun playing together!
The flight home was very uneventful, thankfully, considering when we got back to LA we found out about the attempted terrorist attack in Detroit!  We spent the night in LA, and came home to find that Santa had made a trip to Temecula too.  The boys had such a great Christmas and we are so so grateful to be surrounded by such amazing friends and family.  We have a very special life, and we thank you all for making it so.
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Solstice, and Happy and Safe New Year!
(Pictures of the trip to be uploaded soon)

8/12/2009 - The last 2 months have been a whirlwind!  Troy celebrated his 7th birthday!  Wow, 7!  How time flies.  We also have spending a lot of time at the beach, with friends and did our annual 2 weeks trip to Nonna and Nunnu's.  Up there, Troy lost both upper front teeth.  He looks a little goofy, but he was SO excited.  We were able to do a lot of fun outings, including a block party with our good friends Chris and Corinne and a trip to the Oakland zoo.  My highlight was seeing my friend Todd in SF and hitting my very 1st GIANTS game at ATT park!  I haven't been to a game since they played at Candlestick!

This week we got some good news from Alex's gastroenterologist .  She wants us to take him to an allergist to check on food and environmental allergies, but whatever we are doing in the meantime seems to be working.  It appears to be totally dietary, but the allergist will confirm that.  He is doing great, and gaining weight.  No colonoscopy needed to be scheduled.  If the problem returns and continues, then they will scope for biopsies to test for enzyme deficiencies, but so far, we were very pleased with the current prognosis.

Troy starts 2nd grade this coming Monday and Alex will start Pals in Sept. as a Senior.  We are looking forward to getting back to school and getting our routine back in order after a very busy and fun filled summer!

6/17/09 - The last couple of months have been SUPER busy, but lots of fun.
Jim and I got to get away for our 10th anniversary.  It was very much needed and a great weekend.  But it was too short of course!
We also had a great time at Wildflower per usual!
Jim celebrated his birthday with our great friends the Johnstone's, Jonsey and the Dunn's.  We went wine tasting and then had an amazing meal here at home.
Pals has had us very busy with scrapbooks, family picnic, etc...so much fun and we can't believe we only have one more year left!
Troy is a 2nd grader now.  Wow, how did that happen?  He unfortunately had to miss the last day of school due to a cold and fever.  It was very sad for him, especially since they were celebrating the end of the year with a party at the park.  He also missed a special breakfast for the top readers in the school, of which he was one.  He read 30 books in the last few months and was tested on each and of course, passed.  He also received an amazing end of the year report card.
We celebrated by a field trip with Pals to Legoland on Monday and then a trip to Disneyland with the Ramsay family yesterday.
Next week Troy has Science camp at the Rec Center.  He is beyond excited to build a mini secret spy camera!
That's all for now!

5/6/09 - We had another fabulous weekend at Wildflower this year!  Our Cal Poly friends really are like family to us!
